Marysville is slowly developing a reputation for good live music festivals. After the 1st Australian Steelband Festival in 2013, the town is now hosting an Annual Marysville Jazz & Blues Festival. While not on the official program for 2016 (because we don’t yet have enough Jazz or Blues in our repertoire), Pans on Fire showed their support for the Festival this year by busking in the rotunda opposite the Olde Lolly Shop (run by original band member, Julia Harris).
It was a great day with lots of high-energy pan playing, and it was good to have drummer Joe James back playing with us for the day. An appreciate audience of musos dropped by in between their own gigs at the Festival, and it was interesting to hear their professional comments about the pans, which were new to most of them. Ex-POF player Julie Harris (the Lolly Shop Lady) came across to present a new mascot to the band - it’s going straight to the Panyard.
During a break between sets at the Festival, Peter "Robbo" Robertson (legendary drummer in the well-known Australian band Spectrum) came down with his 4-year-old son Keaton to check out the pans. After explaining the pans to them, it was clear that Keaton was really interested in the drum kit. So we asked him if he could play the drums - silly question!! But it seems that we were late in discovering his talent, given that he made his public debut as a 2-year-old!
